It’s all my fault…

Back in October on a Friday, during the first few days of my last lawncare application of the year, I took my guys to lunch. We’re standing in the lobby of this buffet place waiting for all of my employees to assemble when one guy tells me that it’s going to be his last day.

“What?”

“Yeah, I got a call from this place as I was going to work at once we shut down and they really want me to start on Monday.”

“So…I’m buying you lunch…and you’re giving me four hours notice that you’re quitting?”

“Yeah, is that alright?”

There wasn’t much I couldn’t really do about it. So he left. A month later he raised a stink about not getting his end of the year bonus even though he quit before the end of the year. We ended up giving it to him just to be done with him and because we’re good frakking people.

A month ago he texts me, not calls, and asks if he can come back to work for me. This great new job he left for isn’t all he had hoped and dreamed it would be and he was upset because his employers were allegedly reneging on certain promises they made and what not. I mulled it over for a day and finally sent him a message back saying that we couldn’t help him, sorry.

Last night I run into a mutual acquaintance of ours. This guy asks me what on earth I did to my former employee. I say, “Nothing, why?”

“Well, I talked to him the other day and asked him what’s up and he says, ‘everything’s all screwed up because you’re buddy (me) is a no good liar.’”

I explain to this guy exactly what happened and he laughs. He goes on to tell me that this former employee of mine basically did the same thing at another place twice. In fact, the second time he went back and he left at noon and didn’t come back for three days and couldn’t understand why he didn’t have a job.

I just love that I’m responsible for this guy’s life being in the shits because he quit his job with me and now I won’t hire him back.
